Your Car Does 4,000 Miles a Year. That Is Not Easy Use.

Short trips across town never let an engine finish warming up, and the damage that causes is invisible on an odometer that barely moves.

Plenty of cars in this neighborhood cover less than five thousand miles a year. Their owners reasonably conclude that maintenance can wait, and the manufacturer's mileage interval agrees with them. Both are wrong, and the reason sits in the manual under a heading most people never read.

What "severe service" actually describes

Open any owner's manual and there are two schedules. The normal one assumes steady driving at sustained speed. The severe one lists conditions including frequent short trips, stop-and-go traffic, and extended idling — which is a fair description of nearly every journey made inside this city.

The naming is unfortunate. Severe sounds like towing a trailer through a desert, so owners of a car that runs errands to Clement Street assume it cannot apply. In engineering terms severe means the engine spends a large fraction of its running life outside the conditions it was designed to be efficient in, and a two-mile hop qualifies far more than a hundred-mile freeway run.

Why a cold engine is the problem

An engine needs roughly twelve to fifteen minutes of running to bring oil to full operating temperature, and coolant reaches its target well before oil does. A temperature gauge sitting in the normal position tells you the coolant is ready. It says nothing about the oil.

Two things happen before oil is hot. Fuel that has not fully burned washes past the piston rings and dilutes it, thinning the film that protects bearings and camshaft lobes. Water vapor, a normal product of combustion, condenses inside a cold crankcase instead of evaporating out. Diluted, watered oil is a poor lubricant and it turns acidic as it ages.

The visible symptom is a creamy deposit under the oil filler cap, and owners often panic about head gaskets when they find it. On a car that only does short trips it usually means exactly what it looks like: moisture that never got hot enough to leave.

Direct-injection engines add carbon buildup on the intake valves, and cold, rich running accelerates it. The result is rough idling and hesitation on a car with implausibly low mileage.

Everything else ages on a calendar

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air through the seals and hoses regardless of whether the car moves. Wet fluid boils at a lower temperature, and on a city full of steep descents that matters more here than in most places. Two years is the usual recommendation and it is a time limit, not a distance one.

Rubber has a fixed life. Tires harden and crack from the sidewall inward after about six years whatever the tread depth, and a low-mileage car will almost always age its tires out rather than wear them out. There is a date code on every sidewall. Belts, hoses and wiper blades follow the same logic.

Coolant loses its corrosion inhibitors chemically over time. Once those are exhausted the coolant is still a coolant and no longer a protectant, and the damage lands on the water pump, the radiator and the heater core.

Batteries suffer worst of all. A trip under twenty minutes consumes more charge in starting than the alternator replaces, so a car used only for errands runs at a permanent deficit and sulfates its plates. Most of the batteries replaced on low-mileage city cars die of undercharging rather than age.

A schedule that fits this driving

Change oil on time rather than distance — every six months is sensible for a car doing short urban trips, even if the sticker says otherwise. Flush brake fluid every two years. Replace tires by date once they pass six years, and inspect them for cracking well before that.

Take the car somewhere on the freeway once a month and let it run for half an hour. That single habit boils moisture out of the oil, brings the exhaust up to temperature, and gives the alternator time to actually refill the battery. A drive over the bridge and back does more for a garaged car than any additive sold to solve the same problem.

Have the battery load-tested before winter rather than after it fails. Ask San Francisco Auto Repair for a time-based inspection instead of a mileage service. The list of things checked is genuinely different, and on a car like yours it is the list that matters.
